We are seeking a Researcher in Biomedicine with a focus on Bioinformatics for a fixed-term position at the Department of Medical Sciences.
Subject Area
The subject area for this position is Biomedicine, with a specialization in Bioinformatics.
Background
The successful candidate will work within Genomic Medicine Sweden (GMS), which coordinates the implementation of precision medicine at a national level, paving the way for improved diagnostics, care, and treatment in Sweden. Örebro University, together with Region Örebro County, is part of GMS through the Genomic Medicine Center Örebro (GMC Örebro). Our task is to perform broad gene sequencing of patient samples within healthcare and, through collaboration with the university, enable strong research in the field.
A central challenge in precision medicine is to ensure that new genomic methods, analyses, and decision support tools can be effectively implemented in clinical routine. Research on the implementation of new technologies and working methods is therefore crucial for translating technical innovations into clinical benefits.
This position aims to strengthen research on both the development and implementation of bioinformatics methods for clinical genomics, with a particular focus on how NGS-based analyses in microbiology can be integrated into clinical workflows.
Responsibilities
The researcher position aims to facilitate the further development of scientific merits and skills for individuals with doctoral training.
As a bioinformatician, you will work on technical and bioinformatics tasks related to the National Genomics Platform (NGP), GMS's national initiative for secure storage, analysis, and sharing of genetic data.
Your responsibilities will include, among others:
- Developing analysis pipelines, analyzing, and interpreting data generated from NGS in microbiology
- Installation, configuration, and commissioning of bioinformatics pipelines developed within GMS
- Collaborating with national working groups to enable rapid and reliable identification and typing of microorganisms using NGS
- Contributing to the introduction and evaluation of bioinformatics methods in clinical workflows within genomic diagnostics
- Participating in research on the implementation of genomic analyses and digital infrastructures in clinical operations, including the identification of barriers and enablers for implementation.
Qualifications
To be eligible for this researcher position, you must have obtained a PhD in bioinformatics, biomedicine, or a related field, or hold a foreign degree in a relevant subject that is assessed as equivalent to a PhD.
Selection Criteria
We are looking for someone with a technical or natural science education, preferably in bioinformatics, computer science, biotechnology, or another relevant discipline.
The position requires experience in:
- Bioinformatics analyses and development of pipelines for NGS data
- Working in Linux-based computing environments
- Collaboration in multidisciplinary projects between research and clinical practice.
We consider it an asset if you have:
- Experience in installing, configuring, and commissioning analysis pipelines in a Linux environment
- Practical experience with NGS data management and bioinformatics analyses
- Experience working with pipeline frameworks such as Nextflow or Snakemake
- Experience with national or international research collaborations
- Experience implementing bioinformatics methods or digital tools in clinical or diagnostic operations.
The work is carried out in close collaboration with bioinformaticians, researchers, molecular biologists, medically responsible physicians, and biomedical analysts, both locally and nationally. We therefore require good teamwork skills and very good knowledge of Swedish and English, both spoken and written. We place great importance on personal qualities. The applicant must demonstrate the personal qualities required to perform the current tasks and the ability to contribute to the development of the organization.
As a selection criterion, the ability to inform, collaborate with the surrounding society, and promote the utilization of the university's research is required. Demonstrated ability and willingness to pursue an academic career are also important.
Information
The position is 100% for 6 months. Örebro University applies individual salary setting.
Further information about the position is available from the Head of Unit, Liza Ljungberg, 019-30 14 77, email: [email protected].
